Lawyers’ protest disrupts city courts operations following traffic police dispute

In a significant turn of events, the legal fraternity in the city has initiated a protest strike in response to the booking of some lawyers by the traffic police, as reported by ARY News on Monday. The protest has led to the closure of City Courts’ gates, preventing litigators from entering the court complex and resulting in the deferral of numerous cases scheduled for hearing.

The lawyers’ strike has caused a ripple effect, impacting the transportation of prisoners from jails to courts for the hearing of their cases. The widespread disruption reflects the legal community’s collective response to the alleged mistreatment of lawyers by the traffic police.

The Karachi Bar Association, representing the aggrieved lawyers, has issued a demand to the Inspector General of Police (IG) Sindh for the immediate withdrawal of the First Information Report (FIR) registered against the lawyers. The FIR alleges that the lawyers subjected a traffic police official to torture, marking a significant escalation in the conflict between the legal community and law enforcement.

The protest strike has added complexity to an already strained situation, prompting concerns about the backlog of cases and the impact on individuals awaiting legal proceedings. The closure of City Courts’ gates has not only disrupted the regular functioning of the legal system but has also left many litigants in limbo.

Efforts to resolve the conflict between the lawyers and the traffic police are underway, with stakeholders engaged in discussions to find a resolution and resume normal court operations. The situation highlights the delicate balance between upholding the rule of law and addressing grievances within the legal community, underscoring the need for a swift and amicable resolution to ensure the effective functioning of the justice system.
