The Karachi Traffic Police department has announced plans to introduce a digital challan system and install Auto Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras on various roads in the city, aiming to enhance traffic rule enforcement. This decision comes as part of efforts to modernize the challan system and crack down on traffic violations through the use of technology.
According to DIG Ahmed Nawaz, the ANPR cameras will be deployed across 26 interchanges in the initial phase of implementation. This advanced camera system will enable the identification of vehicles involved in traffic rule violations. Violators will receive digital challans, which will be sent directly to their residences. The system will be integrated with the excise department’s database, facilitating streamlined enforcement procedures.
DIG Nawaz highlighted that the digital challan system, already operational in Islamabad and Lahore, has proven effective in promoting adherence to traffic regulations. By leveraging CCTV cameras and technology-based solutions, the Karachi Traffic Police aims to curb traffic violations, improve road safety, and enhance traffic management in the city.
The introduction of the digital challan system and ANPR cameras reflects the department’s commitment to adopting innovative measures for efficient traffic control. This initiative is expected to streamline the process of penalizing traffic offenders and contribute to the overall improvement of traffic conditions in Karachi.
