Karachi among least livable cities in World

Once again, Karachi is placed among the least livable cities by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). It is ranked 136th among 140 countries for Global Liveability Index (GLI), which makes it fifth least livable city in the world.

For four consecutive years, there is no betterment in the condition of the city and therefore every year it ends up at the bottom. Other cities include Tripoli, Dhaka, Lagos and Damascus. Vienna retains it place for the consecutive years to becomes the most livable city in world. Melbourne again at number two after being at the top for seven consecutive seven years.

EIU gives scores to cities on the basis of living standards, crime, transport, infrastructure, access to education and healthcare, as well as political and economic stability. Considering the factors on which cities are scored, it is clear why Karachi falls in least livable cities.

Regions with good cities at the top of GLI are Western Europe and North America. Eight out of 20 spots were taken by Europe, other spots were achieved by cities from Australia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand.

Climate change impact on livability was noted for the first time by the index. Cities like Cairo and New Delhi dropped down in rank because of poor air quality, inadequate water provision, and undesirable average temperatures.
