JI launches campaign for local govt elections in Karachi

As several parties still sound unprepared for the upcoming local government polls in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions, the city chapter of the Jamaat-i-Islami on Sunday formally launched its election campaign claiming itself “the only option to put the metropolis on the track to progress and development”.

Polling for the second phase of the LG election in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions will be held on July 24.

The JI organised a workers’ convention at the party’s Idara Noor-i-Haq headquarters, where hundreds of its candidates gathered with activists vowing to run an aggressive and effective election campaign.

In his address, JI Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman asked his candidates and workers to reach out every single voter in more than a month-long campaign.

He said that all the available options, other than the JI, in the political arena failed Karachi and Karachiites. “The JI is the only political force in the city which is capable to put Karachi back on the track to progress and development,” he said.

“Fortunately, the people of Karachi have realised who actually works for the megalopolis and who works for personal monetary gains and political point scoring. Incompetence, injustice, corruption and favouritism based policies for Karachi by the incumbent and previous regimes have ruined the city,” he said.

He said that the JI fielded very competent and honest candidates across the city for the local government polls.

The victory of these candidates, he claimed, would ensure peace, progress and development in the megalopolis.

Hafiz Naeem said that only an empowered local government would be able to deliver and address the issues of a mega city like Karachi.

He also demanded that the Sindh government of the Pakistan Peoples Party act upon the agreement signed between the provincial government and the JI that resulted in the culmination of the latter’s 29-day long sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly building.

He also asked the Election Commission of Pakistan, administration and police as well as other law enforcement agencies, to take appropriate steps in order to avoid the law and order situation surfaced recently during by-poll at a national assembly constituency in Karachi.
