Explosion in Karachi kills three ahead of general elections, adding to pre-election violence

Just hours before the commencement of voting for the general elections, Karachi was struck by tragedy as an explosion in the Gulshan Iqbal Haji Limo Goth area claimed the lives of three individuals, including a woman and a child. The nature of the explosion remains under investigation, with authorities yet to ascertain its cause.

According to police sources, initial findings suggest that the explosion occurred when an individual, purportedly carrying a grenade, experienced a mishap resulting in the detonation. The tragic incident underscores the volatile atmosphere surrounding the electoral process, casting a shadow over the impending elections.

The loss of lives in Karachi comes on the heels of a series of deadly explosions outside election offices in Balochistan, which claimed the lives of 24 individuals. The first blast occurred in the Khanuzai area of Pashin district, claiming 14 lives, while the second blast targeted the JUI(F) office in Qila Saifullah, resulting in 12 casualties.

In addition to the explosions, reports emerged of an attack on the vehicle of Hafiz Hamdullah, a central leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F), as he traveled from Chaman to Quetta. Fortunately, Hamdullah escaped unharmed in the attack, highlighting the heightened security concerns surrounding the electoral process.

Against the backdrop of escalating violence and security threats, voting for the general elections is set to commence on Thursday, February 8, at 8:00 am, continuing until 5:00 pm. The incidents of violence underscore the challenges facing the electoral process and emphasize the need for stringent security measures to ensure the safety and integrity of the elections. As the nation braces for the polls, authorities remain vigilant in addressing security concerns and upholding democratic principles amidst a fraught and uncertain environment.
