Caretaker Sindh CM orders audit of 27 universities

Caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh, Maqbool Baqar, has issued directives for the audit of all 27 universities in the province. These instructions were given during a meeting of the Universities & Boards Department and the Sindh Higher Education Commission (SHEC) held at the CM House.

During the meeting, it was brought to light that several universities had not convened meetings of their Senate for an extended period. In response, the interim chief minister instructed the authorities to take action against such universities, including prominent institutions like the University of Karachi and Sindh University, for their failure to hold Senate meetings.

Meanwhile, the University of Karachi (UoK) has resumed its classes following the disbursement of "pending funds” by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to universities across Sindh.

The University of Karachi Professors’ Association confirmed that teaching activities would resume as their demands were met through the intervention of the HEC on the caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh’s directives.

The HEC has released a total grant of Rs 14.39 billion for the second quarter of the year 2023-2024 to universities in the province. The University of Karachi received a substantial allocation of Rs 430 million from the Higher Education Commission Sindh, prompting the Professors’ Association to announce the resumption of teaching activities. Other universities, including Sindh University, Dawood University, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, and NED University, also received significant grant allocations to support their operations.
