Canada is set to welcome digital nomads with a new immigration policy, catering to individuals working remotely from home. As work from home becomes the new norm for many professionals, the desire to explore different countries while continuing their careers is growing.
While full details of the program are yet to be unveiled, Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser has disclosed that foreign nationals will be permitted to stay in Canada for up to 6 months under this initiative. Moreover, digital nomads will have the option to apply for a permanent work permit, granting them an additional 3-year stay in the country if they secure employment.
Minister Fraser expressed that this policy presents a remarkable opportunity for those aspiring to come to Canada. The program is specifically designed to attract skilled workers from overseas and address the labor shortage in key technology sectors.
The program targets individuals employed by companies whose owners are not Canadian. Although it primarily focuses on technology workers, anyone working remotely can apply. The formal launch of the program is slated for the end of 2023, along with the release of applications.
Unlike many other countries’ visa programs, Canada’s digital nomad policy does not impose a minimum salary requirement. This is beneficial as it offers more inclusivity and accessibility to a wider range of applicants.
To apply, individuals must submit an application, photograph, fingerprints, and proof of employment. Once the application is received, immigration officers will conduct interviews to assess eligibility. Upon approval, the passport will be sent to the Canadian government, which will then affix the visa and return it to the applicant.
Visa holders under this program are responsible for making their travel arrangements to Canada and organizing their stay. Once in Canada, they have the freedom to move anywhere within the country and continue working remotely.
The new immigration policy reflects Canada’s recognition of the changing work landscape and aims to attract skilled professionals who can contribute to the country’s economy and technological advancements.
