In a significant move aimed at enhancing aviation infrastructure and safety measures, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has approved the construction of a cutting-edge air traffic control (ATC) tower at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. The decision was made during a board meeting held in Karachi.
The current ATC tower at Jinnah International Airport has been in operation for an impressive 91 years, but it is now facing limitations in terms of height and modern aviation requirements. To address these issues and bolster flight safety, the PCAA has given the green light for the construction of a state-of-the-art ATC tower.
This new tower is expected not only to alleviate the existing limitations but also to significantly enhance visibility and overall flight safety. Remarkably, the project is slated for completion within a year.
In addition to the ATC tower, the PCAA has also decided to establish a Rescue Fire Fighting (RFF) complex at Karachi Airport. This complex will house fire offices and modern fire stations, ensuring rapid and efficient responses to emergency situations, thereby bolstering fire safety measures.
However, it’s worth noting that the project involves foreign exchange amounting to over 25 percent of the design cost, necessitating approval from the Central Tender Working Party (CTWP). Once this approval is secured, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will proceed to formalize an agreement with the chosen consultant for the project.
The PCAA spokesperson emphasized that the new tower’s location and height specifications will strictly adhere to international standards and modern aviation requirements, ensuring its effectiveness and compliance with global aviation norms.
