In yet another alarming incident of police negligence, an accused charged with murder managed to escape from custody while being brought to the City Court Karachi. The accused, identified as Shaukat, was arrested by Napier Police but exploited a glaring oversight in his handcuffs, which lacked a lock.
Police officials revealed that despite being apprehended, the accused slipped away effortlessly due to the handcuffs’ faulty mechanism. Consequently, three policemen, including ASI Ramzan, Constable Shamim, and Ayub, faced suspension for their negligence. Authorities detained the trio and announced intentions to register a case against them for their lapse.
This incident marks the fourth instance of prisoner escape within a month, underscoring a troubling pattern of security lapses within the prison system. Previously, two individuals accused in a drug case, Shehbaz and Sarfraz, had absconded, while another accused, arrested on terrorism charges, made a daring escape from custody during a transfer from Khairpur to Karachi via the highway.
The repeated breaches in security highlight a pressing need for robust reforms and heightened vigilance within law enforcement agencies to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of both officers and the public alike.
