The government’s campaign against fancy number plates and open transfer letters in Karachi is showing significant results. It has been revealed that the number plates of 3 lakh vehicles have been issued in the past year.
According to the Deputy Director of Motor Vehicle Registration Authority Karachi, Ziauddin Shah, the result of the crackdown on vehicles with open transfer letters in Karachi is that 1,600 to 1,800 vehicles are being transferred from the Excise Office in Karachi Civic Center to the name of the original owners every day. He said that more than 26 thousand vehicles have been transferred during the last 2 weeks.
According to Zia Shah, since April 14, 2022, around 3 lakh number plates have been issued to cars, motorcycles, rickshaws and other vehicles with new features. He further said that a significant problem was that number plates were not being issued to rickshaws for the last 3 decades, after 1988, number plates were being issued to rickshaws for the first time. Zia Shah also said that number plates are being issued to old commercial, and non-commercial vehicles, rickshaws and motorcycles, citizens who are transferring vehicles in their name should be careful with the agents and contact the excise department themselves and get vehicles registered and transferred by going to the Motor Vehicle Registration Office.
