PIA issues clarification on cabin crew’s dress code issue

After being chastised for introducing a dress code for cabin personnel and flight hostesses, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) released a clarification on Friday.

"Despite the fact that the purpose of the advise was to maintain correct dress code, the standard bulletin accidentally came out with an unsuitable selection of words,” the chief human resource officer explained in a written clarification, a copy of which is available with Geo.tv.

The national airline had informed its flight crew the day before that wearing underwear underneath the uniform was mandatory. The absence of adequate dress by the flight attendants, according to PIA, creates a "bad impression” and "projects a negative image” of the airline.

However, the announcement received massive backlash from the masses as they felt the words used were “inappropriate”.

Today, the national carrier immediately withdrew the letter keeping in view the revulsion caused by the bulletin.

"I myself feel regretful and am totally sure that the remarks may have been more courteous and suitable in this circumstance,” he stated.

PIA General Manager Flight Services Aamir Bashir had previously stated in an internal instruction memo: "It has been noted with considerable worry that a few cabin staff choose to dress informally while travelling intercity, sleeping in hotels, and visiting various suffices.”

Such attire makes an unfavourable impact on the observer and conveys a negative picture not just of the individual but also of the organisation.”

Bashir requested that the cabin crew "dress correctly” in formal plain clothing over "suitable undergarments.”
