On Tuesday, the Sindh Chief Minster banned carrying polythene bags in universities and urged staff and students to abide by this new law.
In August, Sindh Government had claimed to make the province a plastic bag free zone by banning its use in all places. Speaking at the launch of an awareness campaign in the city Advisor to CM said, “There will be a complete ban on making, selling and use of polythene bags from October 01 this year.” This was to be implemented beginning October 1st and violators could face legal charges.
The law was quickly adopted by the Karachi University in August.
Earlier in March 2018, the government had imposed a complete ban on manufacture, sale and purchase of plastic bags under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Hence, the government is not introducing a new law but implementing an old one as pointed out by a PPP leader.
