In response to the directives of the Government of Pakistan and the national focus on curbing power theft, K-Electric (KE) has launched a proactive campaign against electricity theft in Karachi. The power utility has taken a decisive step by lodging 196 First Information Reports (FIRs) at various police stations across the city. These FIRs relate to the theft of 2 million units of electricity amounting to 123 million rupees.
Remarkably, a significant portion of this electricity theft, 1.5 million units out of 2 million, can be attributed to just 20 customers who have been charged with engaging in illegal electricity theft activities. Among these culprits are illegal hydrants and generator mafias who are involved in the unlawful acquisition of electricity and its resale to various areas.
Moonis Alvi, CEO of K-Electric, stressed the importance of swift and timely action in curbing electricity theft. He highlighted that this unlawful activity not only disrupts the supply of uninterrupted electricity to various areas but also contributes to the national circular debt while hurting customers. Alvi expressed gratitude to the Government of Sindh and law enforcement agencies for their support in ensuring that electricity theft does not go unpunished, ultimately paving the way for a progressive energy sector.
KE has been actively combating electricity theft throughout the year, conducting over 14,000 kunda (illegal connections) removal drives since the beginning of the year. The total weight of the wires removed during these drives has exceeded 130,000 kilograms. KE calls upon its customers to join the company in its efforts to combat power theft, ensuring an uninterrupted supply of electricity for all.
