Electricity tariff surges for Karachi consumers, NEPRA approves Rs4.45 per unit hike

The Power Division has officially announced an increase in electricity tariff for Karachi consumers, with a surge of Rs4.45 per unit, following the approval by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). This adjustment, part of the first quarterly adjustment of the previous fiscal year, will result in additional payments from K-Electric consumers in the months of October and November.

Previously, on October 3, NEPRA had approved an increase of Rs3.28 per unit as part of the quarterly adjustment, covering the period from October 2023 to March 2024. Additionally, on October 5, NEPRA approved a separate hike of Rs1.71 per unit under fuel adjustment charges (FAC) for the month of August, applicable to the bills of October.

The combined effect of these increases adds financial pressure to the already burdened power consumers, particularly in Karachi. The electricity tariff for K-Electric consumers has risen from Rs1.49 per unit to Rs4.45 per unit, contributing to the ongoing challenges faced by consumers in meeting their energy expenses.
