A group of 93 ambitious Pakistani scholars is set to embark on a transformative academic journey to the United Kingdom, thanks to the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programs. This year marks a significant milestone as the 65th anniversary of the Commonwealth Scholarship program coincides with the awarding of 46 Chevening and 47 Commonwealth scholarships to Pakistanis. These long-standing initiatives have cultivated a vibrant network of over 1,500 Commonwealth and nearly 2,000 Chevening alumni in Pakistan.
Hailing from diverse regions of the country, including Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Pakistan Administered Kashmir, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and the Federal Capital Territory, the scholars reflect Pakistan’s rich cultural tapestry. Notably, over 60% of this year’s Chevening scholars are women, underscoring the British High Commission’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity across Pakistan.
British High Commissioner’s Guidance
Ahead of their departure, the scholars received invaluable advice from British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, who shared her top tips for adapting to life in the UK. Marriott emphasized the importance of these scholarships in fostering a new generation of Pakistani leaders and changemakers.
“The Chevening programme helps develop a new generation of Pakistani leaders and changemakers. Many of our alumni have gone on to achieve extraordinary things back home. Not only do they get the benefit of studying at some of the best universities in the world, but they also get to experience the best of living in the UK. From climate studies to football coaching, I am looking forward to seeing what they achieve and encourage all those interested to apply early,” said Marriott.
Scholars’ Aspirations and Diverse Academic Pursuits
Among the selected scholars is Fareeha Gull Hashmi, Assistant Manager of the Oral History Project at the Citizens Archive of Pakistan, who is set to pursue an MA in Heritage and Museum Studies at the University of Essex. Her excitement is palpable as she prepares to embark on a program that aligns perfectly with her aspirations of advancing heritage and cultural preservation in Pakistan.
“I am thrilled to be joining the University of Essex for my MA in Heritage and Museum Studies. This program is exactly what I was looking for to help me on my journey to improve heritage and cultural preservation in Pakistan. I can’t wait for my journey to begin,” said Hashmi.
This year’s cohort includes scholars pursuing unique fields of study, such as Football Science, supported by Swindon Town Football Club, and for the first time, an additional scholarship in Heritage and Museum Studies backed by Essex University. These scholarships cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs, offering a comprehensive support package to the scholars. Additionally, the University of Essex is offering a scholarship for Climate Studies, and the University of Birmingham is providing further scholarships in the current application cycle.
Chevening Connect: A Platform for Dialogue and Collaboration
In a bid to foster dialogue and collaboration, the British High Commission recently launched Chevening Connect in Karachi, a new debate series that brings together industry experts and Chevening alumni. The inaugural debate, centered on tackling climate change, explored the technical, economic, and political leadership required to support Pakistan in building resilience and adapting to the challenges posed by climate change.
As these scholars prepare to embark on their academic journeys, they carry with them not only the hopes and aspirations of their own careers but also the potential to drive meaningful change in Pakistan upon their return. The Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programs continue to be powerful catalysts for personal and professional growth, enabling scholars to access world-class education and contribute to the global exchange of ideas.
