Karachi airport fails global cleanliness standards despite maintenance payments

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Officers Association has raised alarms over the deteriorating cleanliness and maintenance at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, calling it a breach of international standards.

In a letter addressed to the Director General of Pakistan Airports Authority and the Director General of Civil Aviation, the association pointed out several issues, including over 100 neglected trees that have withered due to mismanagement, piles of garbage in parking areas, and stains from chewing tobacco on the premises.

Despite millions being spent on maintenance contractors, the airport continues to fall short of cleanliness standards, tarnishing the image of the Airports Authority with passengers have frequently complained about the poor state of facilities, such as unclean restrooms.

The letter also highlighted an escalating stray dog problem at the airport, with dogs now roaming near main entrances, exits, and parking areas, creating safety concerns.

Previously confined to tarmac and general aviation areas, stray dogs have expanded into critical passenger zones, even attacking vehicles.

Airport officials are working with Edhi officials to address the issue, but efforts so far have been insufficient.

The stray dog presence at the airport violates international civil aviation safety standards, potentially compromising flight operations and passenger safety.

The association has called for immediate action to resolve these ongoing problems and restore the airport’s reputation.
