Karachi’s 15-year-long wait is set to end as the Sindh government on Monday announced that the construction for the city’s Red Line Bus Project will begin within 90 days.

Jang Newspaper reported Sindh Transport Minister Owais Shah as saying that the bus project, which will cost Rs. 78 billion, is being launched after the Asian Development Bank entered into a loan agreement with the provincial government.

Shah said that bus service will run through Model Colony, Airport, Safoora Chowrangi, Mausamyat, University Road and Numaish Chowrangi. He added that 26 km red line BRT would have 24 stations and 213 buses.

The transport minister said that the Green Climate Fund has given a grant of Rs11 million for the Red Line Bus project and a special fuel made from cow dung will be used to power the buses and a biogas plant will be set up in Bhains Colony for this purpose.

The Sindh government will spend Rs 75 million on the project and the city’s longest cycling track will be created parallel to the bus track. The project will also use a state-off-the-art third-generation BRT system.
