Murtaza Wahab stated on Monday that the electoral commission failed to discuss with the administration the schedule of the local government elections.
Administrator Karachi spoke to the media during a municipal tax collection hearing in the Sindh High Court (SHC).
He said that the electoral commission set the schedule of the municipal elections for October 23 without consulting the Sindh government.
Wahab stated at the court hearing that the court had been notified that the tax had been levied after meeting all legal criteria.
"It’s not a new tax, but an existing one that’s being collected through a new system,” he explained. "Before the court’s stay order, we had collected 61.9 million rupees in tax,” he said.
"Previous municipal administrations pretended not to have authorities, but we are operating and collecting taxes with the same authority,” Administrator Karachi said. "The tax would deposit 3.25 billion rupees into the KMC’s account each year,” he stated.
"It is a transparent system,” he says, "but certain individuals who don’t want transparency are against it.” "The details of the tax amount will be provided on the website each month,” he stated. "The website will also provide details on how tax dollars were used on a given project,” he added.
"The tax money will be spent honestly, and people may inquire about it,” he stated. "It was fantastic when Naimatullah Khan commercialised highways under the law,” he added. "I am supporting openness.” "I do everything in accordance with the law,” he continued.
Earlier in the municipal tax hearing, the court appointed two constitutional experts and former attorney generals, Munir A. Malik and Khalid Javed Khan, to assist the court in the matter.
