24pc educated people are jobless countrywide: PIDE

The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) on Monday sounded the alarm regarding the rising rate of unemployment across the country.

According to statistics shared by them, 24 per cent of educated people are currently jobless.

The PIDE, in its briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Planning and Development meeting, said the unemployment rate in the country had reached 16pc — contrary to the government’s claim of 6.5pc. It was also announced at as many as 40pc of educated women in the country are jobless.

To clarify, the term ‘educated’ here has been used to refer to people who have a graduate degree.

The officials also made the shocking and shameful revelation that in response to an advertisement for the position of a peon’s job at a high court, as many as 1.5 million people applied for the job, including MPhil holders.
