In a significant initiative to address Karachi’s persistent traffic congestion issues, the city is gearing up to implement a technology-driven solution aimed at keeping citizens well-informed about dynamic traffic conditions. Led by DIG Traffic and Sindh Police Chief Riffat Mukhtar Raja, this effort involves deploying large Surface-Mounted Device (SMD) screens at key locations across Karachi.
Karachi’s traffic challenges have long plagued its residents, and the upcoming installation of 10 strategically positioned SMD screens on major roadways is expected to bring relief. These screens will not only display real-time traffic updates but also offer alternative routes, providing a valuable resource for commuters navigating the city’s perpetual congestion.
Additionally, the screens will convey essential information about traffic disruptions caused by ongoing construction activities, empowering commuters to make informed decisions on the road. Riffat Mukhtar Raja, during a recent visit to the DIG Traffic’s office, emphasized the importance of instilling traffic discipline and awareness, particularly among the younger generation.
The Sindh Police Chief highlighted the need to educate youngsters on traffic laws, with a vision to introduce educational programs on traffic regulations in educational institutions. This proactive step aims to address reckless driving habits and contribute to a safer and more organized road network.
In conjunction with the SMD screens, Raja was briefed on various technological advancements by the traffic police. The deployment of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at strategic locations, including 26 along the arterial Shahrah-e-Faisal, is set to enhance the enforcement of traffic rules.
Recognizing the manpower challenges faced by traffic management, Riffat Mukhtar Raja stressed the necessity of strengthening the traffic police force to better tackle the city’s traffic-related challenges. The impending introduction of SMD screens is poised to improve traffic flow management on Karachi’s busiest roadways, promising a smoother and more efficient transportation experience for residents.
