Karachi mayor approves solar power conversion for 9,000 KMC shops

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced plans to convert over 9,000 shops in more than 50 markets, including the historic Empress Market, to solar power.

The decision, approved by Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, aims to reduce electricity costs and promote environmental sustainability.

During a meeting with the KMC estate department, Mayor Wahab issued directives to initiate the project, starting with Bahadur Shah Zafar Market located at Karachi’s M.A. Jinnah Road.

In addition to the solar power conversion, the project will improve the physical and internal conditions of these markets, with a focus on digitizing records related to shop licenses and other transactions.

The mayor also reviewed the revenue collection performance for the current financial year, setting ambitious targets for 2024 and 2025.

The target for 2023-24 is Rs 290 million, with Rs 315 million set for 2025. He emphasized the importance of increasing rental revenue from these markets, which are located in prime areas but currently have minimal rents.

“The 11-month exemption period for KMC shops will see an increase based on market value,” said the mayor.

Furthermore, Mayor Wahab called for the digitization of records for markets, including Empress Market, to prevent alterations and ensure transparency.

He also announced plans to set up more public toilets around the city to alleviate challenges faced by residents, particularly women and the elderly.

Additionally, he directed to initiate work on setting up KMC kiosks at various points around major roads.
