Rape & murder of female doctor in Calcutta sparks outrage

The brutal murder and gang rape of a 31-year-old female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Calcutta, West Bengal, has ignited a nationwide wave of protests, demanding justice and accountability. The heinous crime, which took place on August 9, 2024, has shaken India to its core, leading to widespread condemnation and calls for systemic change.

The Crime That Shocked a Nation

On the night of August 9, the postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead with severe facial injuries in the seminar hall of the hospital. The post-mortem report confirmed that she had been raped and then murdered, sparking immediate outrage. The victim’s parents have accused her colleagues of being involved, further intensifying public anger.

Arrests and Political Fallout

The following day, August 10, police arrested Sanjay Rai, a suspect in the case. The swift arrest did little to calm the growing unrest as medical professionals, student organizations, and political figures across India took to the streets, demanding justice for the victim and her family.

By August 11, the West Bengal government, in response to mounting pressure, removed the superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, citing alleged lapses in the handling of the case. The removal, however, was seen by many as a mere symbolic gesture rather than a meaningful action.

On August 12, the scandal led to the resignation of Prof. Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In solidarity, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) announced a nationwide shutdown of elective medical services, bringing healthcare facilities across the country to a standstill.

Protests and Legal Action

The protests only intensified by August 13, with doctors across India rallying in solidarity with the victim. The Calcutta High Court weighed in, condemning the incident as “extremely horrific” and ordered the former principal of the college to take an extended leave of absence. The ongoing protests severely disrupted hospital services nationwide.

On August 14, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stepped in, taking the accused into custody and launching a thorough investigation into the crime. The involvement of the CBI has raised hopes that justice will be served, but it has also highlighted the inadequacies in the initial handling of the case by local authorities.

Tragedy struck again on August 15, when a group of unidentified individuals attacked RG Kar Medical College Hospital, vandalizing the emergency department and nursing station. This act of violence further fueled the outrage, with many seeing it as an attempt to intimidate those protesting for justice.

Nationwide Medical Strike and Calls for Intervention

On August 17, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced a nationwide 24-hour boycott of medical services, protesting both the rape and murder of the doctor and the violence against those advocating for justice. The IMA’s President, Dr. RV Asokan, publicly appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the case, stating, “It is high time the Prime Minister intervened in this matter.”

The National Commission for Women (NCW) raised concerns about sudden renovations at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, fearing that these actions might compromise evidence or indicate security lapses. This development has added to the growing mistrust in the authorities’ ability to handle the case impartially and effectively.

A Nation on Edge

The death of the female doctor has not only highlighted the ongoing issue of sexual violence in India but has also exposed systemic failures within the healthcare and law enforcement sectors. The public outcry and protests reflect a deep-seated frustration with the status quo, where justice for victims of such heinous crimes often remains elusive.

As the nation waits for the next steps in the investigation, the case has become a symbol of the broader struggle for women’s safety and justice in India. The outcome of this case will likely have far-reaching implications for the country’s legal and social systems, as the public continues to demand accountability, transparency, and, above all, justice for the victim and her grieving family.
