Customs catches passenger with 29 iPhones strapped to his body

In a significant operation, Pakistan Customs successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a cache of valuable items, including high-end electronics and luxury goods, through Jinnah International Airport. The operation led to the arrest of a passenger attempting to smuggle 29 iPhones, laptops, women’s clothing, and cosmetics, with the total value of the seized items estimated at Rs7.5 million.

The incident occurred when Muhammad Danial Nasir, a passenger on Flydubai flight FZ333, landed at Jinnah International Airport. Attempting to blend in with other travelers, Nasir sought to pass through the green channel—a designated route for passengers with nothing to declare—hoping to avoid customs scrutiny.

However, customs officials, led by Additional Collector Faisal Khan, became suspicious of Nasir’s behavior. “Our officers are trained to spot irregularities, and this passenger’s conduct raised red flags,” Khan explained. Acting on their instincts, the officials decided to conduct a thorough inspection of Nasir’s body and luggage.

The inspection revealed a surprising discovery: 29 iPhones were found strapped to Nasir’s body. The devices were concealed in an effort to bypass customs checks, but the smuggling attempt was foiled by the vigilant officials. The search didn’t stop there; additional contraband was found in Nasir’s luggage, including 14 more iPhones, 2 laptops, women’s clothing, chocolates, and various cosmetics.

The total value of the seized goods is estimated at Rs7.5 million, highlighting the scale of the smuggling operation. “This is a significant seizure, not only because of the value of the goods but also because it represents a sophisticated attempt to evade customs regulations,” Khan remarked.

Following the discovery, Pakistan Customs immediately registered a case against Nasir. He was arrested on the spot, and the smuggled items were confiscated. The authorities are now investigating the origins of the goods and whether Nasir was part of a larger smuggling network.

The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by customs officials to combat smuggling and protect the country’s economic interests. “This operation is a testament to our commitment to maintaining the integrity of our borders and preventing illegal goods from entering the country,” Khan stated.

The successful interception of the smuggled goods at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport is expected to have broader implications for efforts to curb smuggling in Pakistan. The seizure not only represents a financial blow to those involved in the smuggling operation but also sends a strong message to others who might attempt similar illegal activities.

Smuggling of high-value electronics, like iPhones and laptops, is a growing concern for authorities, as such goods often evade taxes and duties, leading to significant revenue losses for the government. Moreover, the sale of smuggled goods undermines legitimate businesses that operate within the legal framework, creating an uneven playing field.
