The incidents of children falling into open manholes and losing their lives are on the rise in Karachi.

According to the police, a tragic incident occurred last evening in Shah Latif Town Sector 22B, where a 4-year-old child fell into an open manhole and lost his life. Similarly, on March 17, another heartbreaking incident took place at Ghaghar Phatak, where a young girl drowned in the water board line. The 1-year-old, Sonia, was simply washing dishes near the main water line when the accident happened.

These incidents are not isolated. Last year, on September 3, 2023, a 4-year-old girl tragically died after falling into a sewer in Muach Goth. Prior to that, on August 14, a two-and-a-half-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an open sewer in Malir Memon Goth.

Adding to the grim tally, on May 6, 2023, 10-year-old Abhiyan went missing after falling into an open manhole in Gulshan Iqbal. Shockingly, a case for this incident was only registered after a lapse of 10 months.

These heartbreaking occurrences highlight a pressing need for urgent action to prevent such tragedies in the future. The safety of children must be prioritized, and measures should be taken to ensure that open manholes and dangerous areas are properly secured to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
