In a modernization initiative, the Central Jail in Karachi has implemented an online appointment system for families wishing to meet with prisoners. The move comes on the heels of the recent inauguration of a video-link system for prisoners to appear in court. The authorities aim to streamline jail procedures and bring them in line with contemporary practices.

Families of prisoners can now schedule visits through a dedicated mobile application, marking a significant shift towards convenience and efficiency. The application allows users to enter their details and secure an appointment for visiting their incarcerated relatives. This online appointment system is expected to alleviate the challenges faced by families, especially those traveling from afar.

The initiative was officially inaugurated by the Sindh Interior Minister, Brigadier (retd) Haris Nawaz, who expressed gratitude for the support received from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Agency of the United States in developing the project. He highlighted the project's overdue nature, citing the prolonged waiting times and challenges faced by the families of prisoners during visitations.

To facilitate the implementation of the online appointment system, five booths have been set up near the main gate of the jail. These booths serve as points for guidance and verification for individuals arriving for scheduled meetings.

Assistant Superintendent Jail Misbahuddin shared insights into the project, noting that it was developed in collaboration with the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Agency. He mentioned that the system is part of ongoing efforts to modernize jail operations.

Minister Haris Nawaz emphasized the positive impact of the project on visitor experiences, stating that individuals seeking appointments must do so two days in advance. This proactive approach is expected to significantly reduce the waiting times and challenges faced by those visiting prisoners in Central Jail Karachi. Furthermore, the minister expressed intentions to extend the project to other jails, ensuring broader accessibility to the benefits of the online appointment system.
